D’s Black Diamond Watermelon - First Garden Update
Hi Reader!
Here’s a first little garden update from not my garden. Oh, I wish I took some pictures earlier, because mymymy! how these plants have grown!
My friend, “D” (for privacy’s sake), has been laboring in the hot Orange County sun for most of the summer. She’s been carefully pondering about what she should plant since the wintertime.
Since then, she’s accumulated an avocado tree (?), tomato plant, shishito pepper plant, jalapeno plant, and some more… the grandest of them all, her Black Diamond Watermelon. For these plants, she has tirelessly been back and forth at Home Depot with her husband, “B.” Bags and bags of mulch from trunk to backyard. She’s even been to the Angel’s Stadium very early in the morning to get herself some magical compost.
D has told the house multiple times throughout the summer that the watermelon plant needs its water. She’s bought a small scale watering can for precision watering. Once or twice a day, I watch her as she puts on her gardening shoes and sun hat to go outside in the heat. It was only after the hundredth time that I realized that the plant does need a lot of water. It’s a watermelon after all.
After our Pismo Beach trip + 1 weekend, I came back to the plant expecting nothing more than I’d last seen it.
Today, it’s a monster. Jack and his beanstalk. And those tiny flowers had grown fruit.
Funny how our Sunday sermon this past weekend was about the Fruits of the Spirit.
